#ProjectKankare: Empowering Girls and Women with Skills for Reduced Vulnerability and Enhanced Economic Prospect
At WeCan Africa, we prioritize skills development for young girls and women because we believe that when women especially young girls are empowered with the right skills, then the world is bound to be prosperous.
After several days of engagement with Kankare community in Kano State, Through #ProjectKankare, we have successfully trained over 30 young girls and women on various vocational and entrepreneurial skills. This include skills on hair making, knitting, soap making other financial literacy skills.
We also engaged the community members and sensitised the gatekeepers on the need to allow girls empower girls economically and allow them to pursue their dreams and grow.
The goal is to improve their sources of income and livelihood, reduce their vulnerability to harmful traditional practices and other socio cultural barriers limiting their growth while contributing to human capital development and poverty eradication.
At the end of the training, we were able to provide the girls and women with the following hair-making kits: 20 hair combs, 20 hair creams, 20 cutting combs, 20 wools, 10 hair shampoos and 10 hair conditioning. This is to enable them immediately put their skills to use while exploring other opportunities that will enable them prosper in their new learned skills.
The identified gap is that many girls and women in the community are married off early and have very limited access to skills or educational opportunities to thrive.
Our hope is to be able to train more girls and women in the community, connect them to mentors and also link them to market access to be able to effectively put their skills to use.
