#ProjectKankare: Our Trained Girls and Women Making Earnings through their New Learned Skills

On the 9th of September, 2019, exactly two months today, we concluded our first cohort of training for 30 women and girls through #ProjectKankare Community of Kano State where we empowered 30 young girls and women with vocational skills on hair-making and treatment, soap making, knitting and financial literacy skills.

Today, we revisited the community for an evaluation to know what impact we were able to make in the lives of the girls and women through our project and it has been a success. Within the span of two months, 16 out the 30 girls were able to generate enough income from their new learned skills.
One of the girls, 16 year old Zainab Mukhtar who has made N600 just from hair making, when speaking with our Executive Director, Sadiya Murtala, said that, "I never knew there could make hair and make money out of it. Prior to this time, I had no such thing to keep me busy and meet my daily ends at the end. All credits goes to WeCan for changing my life."
When Zainab was asked about her plans, she said, "my plan is to make hair making a big business in the nearest future where I too will be able to train and empower other young girls." During our time there, we also had basic literacy sessions with children in the community, continuing from where we stopped from our previous visit.

Our vision is to continue to empower young girls and women, especially those from underserved communities, ad the next generation lwaders and entrepreneurs through skills development.
